10 Days - Kilimanjaro Machame Route

Behold the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, standing tall as Africa’s highest peak, a symbol of nature’s grandeur and wonder.

The Machame route on Kilimanjaro is renowned for its seven-day camping journey, offering excellent acclimatization opportunities and diverse scenery. Formerly known as the Whiskey route, it now sees approximately 35% of all climbers on the mountain.

Over the course of a mere week, climbers ascend Kilimanjaro from the equator to an Arctic zone, traversing through grasslands, tropical rainforests, alpine meadows, moorlands, high desert, and finally, snow and ice. Each day on this route unveils a distinct ecosystem, contributing to its popularity among climbers.

The seven-day program begins on the southwest side of the mountain and winds its way around to the southeast side. This unique path allows climbers to sleep at the same altitude for three consecutive nights, significantly aiding in altitude acclimatization. Consequently, the summit success rate on this route is impressively high, standing at around 85%.

Our trips are strictly seven days long, as recommended by international mountain associations like the UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation), ensuring optimal safety standards. While the Machame route could theoretically be completed in six days by skipping Karanga Valley and heading straight to Barafu, experience has shown that this leads to increased sickness and a much lower summit success rate.

From the outset, you’ll be in contact with experienced climbers, including Gavin Bate, who has been leading groups on Kilimanjaro since 1994. Our team provides honest advice on the climb, training requirements, and necessary clothing and equipment. This personalized service extends to our staff in Tanzania, where our coordinator, Safe Adventures and Expeditions, meets you for a team briefing along with our guides.
