Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to almost half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas and is its most popular destination. Here you will walk a zigzag path through the mountain landscape in search of dangerous animals. As you climb, you might be lucky enough to spot the elusive forest elephant, just one of 120 other species in the park.
Chimpanzees, Horst monkeys, duikers, antelopes, African golden cats and rare forest pigs are other inhabitants of this forest. The lush forest, which is home to more than 350 bird species, will amaze bird lovers.
There is abundant wildlife here with giraffes, lions, zebras, hippos, crocodiles and elephants. It is very enjoyable to see the legendary tree-climbing lion and more than 600 bird species here. Besides game drives, it’s also a great adventure to sail the Kazinga Channel, where you’ll be sure to see hippos in the water, or to walk the Kembula Pass, where there are chimpanzees.
These mountains, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, were once thought to be the source of the Nile River and were called “Mountains of the Moon” by the ancient astronomer and geographer Ptolemy. There are waterfalls, lakes and glaciers in the misty mountains. The mountain, which is not a volcano, stretches for about 70 kilometers and is a sanctuary for animals and plants, including more than 240 species of birds.
The three highest in the range are Margherita (16,760 feet), Mount Alexander (16,676 feet) and Mount Albert (16,689 feet), all in Stanley, the three highest mountains in the African Range. There are dense forests in the lower parts, which gradually turn into swamps towards the top.
Covering an area of 1,483 square miles, Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park; here the Nile twice cuts it with a narrow channel before flowing into Lake Albert. Travelers can take a boat tour to the base of the falls and hike along the Nile to the top, where they can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains.
Safari riders should enjoy crowds of elephants, Rothschild giraffes, lions, buffalos, hippos and crocodiles. Small animals include Ugandan antelope, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribi and wild boar; elusive predators such as spotted hyenas, lions, leopards and jackals; and more than 450 species of birds.
